Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) is seeking a skilled Pathologists’ Assistant to join our Laboratory Services team within our comprehensive Healthcare & Medical Services network in Upstate New York. In this role, you will work closely with pathologists, surgeons, and multidisciplinary clinical teams to support accurate and timely diagnosis for our patients. Under the direction and supervision of a pathologist, you will perform gross examination, description, dissection, and submission of surgical specimens ranging from routine biopsies to complex oncologic resections. You will assist with autopsies, including external examination, organ dissection, tissue sampling, and proper documentation of findings, ensuring adherence to all regulatory and institutional standards. The Pathologists’ Assistant will be responsible for maintaining specimen integrity, verifying patient identification, and ensuring appropriate fixation, labeling, and tracking throughout the workflow. You will contribute to quality assurance activities, assist in developing and updating grossing protocols and standard operating procedures, and help maintain CAP, CLIA, and hospital accreditation requirements. Daily responsibilities include working in a fast-paced gross room, operating and maintaining grossing equipment, utilizing the laboratory information system for test ordering and specimen documentation, and collaborating with histology staff to optimize tissue processing and turnaround times. You will support resident and staff education by demonstrating best practices in grossing technique, specimen orientation, and complex dissection. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable with high specimen volumes, and demonstrates strong judgment in recognizing unusual or complex pathology requiring direct pathologist input. Strong communication skills, respect for patient privacy and dignity, and a commitment to safety and infection control are essential. MVHS fosters a supportive environment emphasizing teamwork, respect, and employee welfare, and this role offers the opportunity to participate in process improvement, multidisciplinary case reviews, and professional development. As part of a growing health system, you will have meaningful opportunities to advance your skills, contribute to innovation in diagnostic services, and support our mission to improve community health across Upstate New York.
